Artificial insemination is one of the most common types of fertility treatment, and for good reason. It’s simple, minimally invasive and is often recommended as a first step when you’re starting treatment. Compared to more complex procedures like IVF, it is also more affordable.

This type of treatment is a popular choice for single women, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples who are starting a family with the help of a sperm donor.

In this blog post, we’ll explain what artificial insemination is, who it’s suitable for and what the process typically involves, so you can make an informed decision about your next steps.

What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination is a type of fertility treatment where donor sperm is placed either in the cervix or uterus around the time of ovulation to enhance the chances of getting pregnant.

There are two approaches for the insemination process:

  • ICI: Intracervical insemination is a non-invasive method where donor sperm is placed high in the vagina close to the cervix. Sperm cells then travel naturally through the cervical canal, uterus and fallopian tubes to reach an egg and fertilise it. This method mimics natural conception more closely than other types of fertility treatment.
  • IUI: Intrauterine insemination involves placing sperm directly into a woman's uterus with a small, soft catheter. This simple insemination process places the sperm close to the egg to fertilise it.

Artificial insemination is usually recommended for women and couples with no known fertility challenges. IUI can also be used for women who have mild endometriosis, anovulation or unexplained fertility.

How to do artificial insemination at home

Some women and couples prefer to have insemination treatment at home. This can be done with assisted home insemination. Here you have the opportunity to be in a familiar or home environment where you can feel more relaxed.

The process is simple. The donor sperm is sent to a healthcare professional or a fertility clinic. In addition to the donor sperm, the healthcare professional will receive an insemination kit with detailed instructions so he or she can facilitate the process.

Be aware that the process can only be done if you are having treatment in Denmark. An authorised health care professional, like a gynaecologist, a nurse or a medical doctor, also needs to be involved. This is regulated by Danish law.

What to expect during the insemination process

The process of artificial insemination is relatively similar whether you choose ICI or IUI and usually includes the following steps:

Fertility assessment

Before you begin ICI or IUI treatment, you’ll have your fertility evaluated with a fertility specialist. This often includes tests such as blood samples and an ultrasound scan to assess your fertility and determine the best approach to treatment.

Ovulation monitoring

Timing is very important in both ICI and IUI. To ensure the most optimal conditions for a positive result of artificial insemination it is necessary to monitor your cycle with ovulation tests, ultrasound scans or blood tests. If you’re having IUI treatment, hormone treatment will often be used to mature eggs and time ovulation.

Insemination

Depending on the type of artificial insemination, either ICI- or IUI-ready donor sperm will be placed in your cervix or uterus at the time of your cycle when you are most fertile. Both procedures are simple and quick. Some recommend that you relax 30 minutes after the insemination.

Pregnancy test

In about two weeks after insemination, you’ll take a pregnancy test to see if the treatment was successful.

Getting pregnant isn’t always straightforward, and it can take several rounds of artificial insemination treatment before you get pregnant - just as it can take time to get pregnant without treatment.

Is artificial insemination right for you?

Artificial insemination is a popular choice that can help increase the chances of getting pregnant. Some of the reasons why it has gained popularity is:

  • The treatment is suitable for solo mums, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples using donor sperm
  • It is a simple and minimal invasive type of treatment
  • It is less expensive compared to IVF and ICSI

You should always consult with your doctor or fertility specialist to decide which type of treatment is best for you and your situation. Fertility challenges such as PCOS and blocked fallopian tubes can be reasons to choose another type of treatment. Age also has a lot to say when it comes to fertility, and if you’re over the age of 35, IVF might be a better option for you.
