Pregnancy Slot & Barnrett

Pregnancy Slot

The legislation that governs the amount of families to which a donor can contribute, otherwise known as pregnancy limits, differ from country to country. In order to ensure that these pregnancy limits are respected, some treatment countries require that you purchase a Pregnancy Slot.

A Pregnancy Slot gives you the right to use the same sperm donor for multiple children, thus ensuring that you can use the same donor sperm for potential siblings. That said, owning a Pregnancy Slot does not guarantee that your selected sperm donor will have available straws. We advise you to register for a sperm storage unit and purchase straws simultaneously with purchasing a Pregnancy Slot.

Barnrett

Barnrett covers one child

In Norway, the Pregnancy Slot is mandatory and slightly different. It is called Barnrett and gives you the right to use a donor for one child only. This means that you need a Barnrett for each pregnancy.

Norwegian law stipulates that there can only be 6 families and 8 children per donor. It is only permitted to use the straws purchased through Barnrett for the conception of one child - not for siblings. We recommend that you consider how many children you want and purchase the relevant amount of Barnrett immediately.

Make sure you have enough straws

Owning a Pregnancy Slot does not guarantee that your selected sperm donor will have available straws. We advise you to register for a sperm storage unit and purchase straws simultaneously with purchasing a Pregnancy Slot.
