Preparation

Avoid ejaculation for 48–168 hours before visiting us to provide your sample.

If you have had a fever, we recommend waiting three months before visiting us.

Please note that this analysis cannot be used to diagnose infertility or confirm whether a vasectomy has been successful.

What does the semen analysis include?

We examine the following parameters in your semen sample: volume, total sperm count and motility. Together, these provide an indication of your overall sperm quality. Your sperm quality is considered normal when the sample values meet or exceed the following WHO reference values:

  1. Semen volume: Min. 1.5 mL
  2. Total sperm count: 39 million
  3. Sperm concentration: 15 million/mL
  4. Progressive motility: 32% (the percentage of sperm that move forward effectively)

GET YOUR SEMEN ANALYSIS RESULTS QUICKLY

Your semen analysis result will be ready by the next working day. We will send the result to you by email.

If your sperm quality is below the WHO reference range, we recommend contacting your doctor for further assessment. Reduced sperm quality can have many causes, including a common illness accompanied by fever.

HOW TO GET YOUR SPERM QUALITY TESTED

You do not need to make an appointment. Simply visit one of our locations in Copenhagen N or Aarhus.
When you arrive, check in at reception and show your ID. You will be given a sample cup and shown to a private room where you can produce your semen sample. Once you have finished, hand the sample in at reception. We will then analyse it in our laboratory.

You will receive the result of your semen analysis by email on the next working day.

For the most reliable result, we recommend refraining from ejaculation for at least two days and no more than seven days before your semen analysis.

Why have a semen analysis?

There are many good reasons to have your sperm quality checked. Knowing your sperm quality can be helpful if you are considering starting a family or are having difficulty conceiving.

Fertility challenges are linked to low sperm quality in up to one-third of cases. A semen analysis is therefore often one of the first steps in a fertility assessment. Low sperm quality may mean that you need fertility treatment to help you have a child.

Sperm storage and freezing

More and more people are choosing to set up a sperm storage. This may be before medical treatment, because of work-related factors or simply for extra reassurance about future fertility options.
